Rome 2016: An Itinerary Revealed!

In October 2016, our chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums will embark on an amazing tour of the Vatican and its museums, as well as Assisi (on the feast of St. Francis, no less!) and to Florence (with a private tour of the Uffizi!). In typical patrons’ style, we will enjoy these locales with expert docents, exquisite meals and lodgings, and many exclusive opportunities.

Here’s your sneak peak at the tentative itinerary:

Day 1: Sunday, October 2, 2016:
Depart USA on scheduled flights to Italy. The flight is not included in the package.

Day 2: Monday October 3, 2016
Mid-morning: Transfer from Fiumicino Airport to Assisi. Stop en route for lunch and continue on to Assisi. Upon arrival, visit the Basilica of St. Francis, then check in to hotel with time to freshen up before the special reception and welcome dinner tonight at Hotel Subasio. Overnight in Assisi. (D)

Day 3: Tuesday October 4, 2016
After breakfast, participate in the Francis Festival this morning. Time for lunch on your own. This afternoon, visit the churches of Santa Chiara, San Damiano and St. Mary of the Angels, and see the portiuncula. Remainder of the evening at your leisure. Dinner on your own and overnight in Assisi.

Day 4: Wednesday October 5, 2016
Breakfast at your hotel. Enjoy Assisi’s markets before departing mid-morning for Florence. Stop for lunch near Lake Trasimeno. Upon arrival in Florence, enjoy a walking tour of the city, followed by dinner at a local restaurant and overnight in Florence.

Day 5: Thursday October 6, 2016
Start your day with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a guided tour of the church of San Marco, and a visit to the Academia to see Michelangelo’s famous “David”, among other great works. Time for lunch at your leisure. This afternoon, visit the Uffizi Gallery. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure to rest, enjoy shopping near the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, and experience other city highlights. Overnight in Florence.

Day 6: Friday October 7, 2016
After breakfast this morning, depart for Rome. Enjoy an afternoon lunch stop in Orvieto, with time to see the Duomo. Continue on to Rome to enjoy a cocktail reception and dinner at the Hotel de Russie. Overnight in Rome.

Day 7: Saturday October 8, 2016 – Christian Rome
After breakfast at your hotel, morning tour of three of the seven ancient Pilgrim Churches: Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside-the-Walls, Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem and St. Sebastian Outside-the-Walls. We will stop for Lunch on your own. In the afternoon we will continue with two more of the Ancient Pilgrim Churches: Afternoon tour of three of the ancient pilgrim Churches: The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls. We will end the day with a reception at the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Evening and dinner at your leisure. Overnight in Rome.

Day 8: Sunday October 9, 2016
After breakfast at your hotel, informal morning visit of St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by Mass. After Mass you will be able to attend the Papal Angelus in St. Peter’s Square. You will then go to the Casina of Pius IV in The Vatican Gardens for lunch. After lunch you will go on a guided tour of the Vatican Gardens. Evening and dinner at your leisure. Overnight in Rome.

Day 9: Monday October 10, 2016
After breakfast, visit the Vatican Museums with special attention to the restorations sponsored by Minnesota Patrons. Lunch will be served on the Etruscan Terrace. Afternoon at leisure. Later this afternoon depart for the Vatican to celebrate mass in Chapel of the Governatorato. After Mass, enjoy a private tour of Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, followed by a special reception and farewell Gala Dinner in the Pinacoteca. Overnight in Rome.

Day 10: Tuesday October 11, 2016
This morning, transfer individually to the Fiumicino International Airport for your return flights home
