A Pair of Monumental Tables with Bronze Figures of Hercules and Scenes from
the Life of Pope Pius VI
These two magnificent tables were commissioned under Pope Pius VI and realized at the end
of the 18th century by the sculptor Vincenzo Pacetti, the silversmith Giuseppe Valadier and
the goldsmith Pietro Paolo Spagna.
The tables were in a bad state of preservation as the iron structures contained oxidized
surfaces and the decorative bronze elements were covered with dust, grease, and old
oxidizing protective agents. The restoration consisted in the complete dismantling of the
decorative elements in order to restore the internal iron structure and to remove the old
protective agents and other surface deposits. The metal surfaces were cleaned and the
elements were stabilized through chemical treatments and a protective covering. Finally,
all pieces were reassembled and the decorative elements were replaced on the work.
